Guide offers tips to church mission teams
WASHINGTON (UMNS)—A new advocacy guide for church mission teams traveling internationally has been prepared by Bread for the World in conjunction with its religious partners, including the United Methodist Committee on Relief and Church World Service. “Getting Ready to Come Back” is designed to help such teams understand the root causes of hunger and poverty in the communities and countries they visit. Tools throughout the resource help teams prepare for their trip, reflect on their experiences, and take action once back home—all with the goal of making a long-term impact by helping address the causes of hunger and poverty. The guide also includes Bible studies, suggested discussion topics and prayers for each part of the journey. Copies can be ordered or downloaded at www.bread.org/advocacyguide.

Hymnal revision stopped due to lack of funds

Lyght, chairperson of the hymnal revision committee. The United Methodist Publishing House would have to invest at least $2 million to develop a new hymnal and funding is not available from ongoing operations or from reserves, said Neil Alexander, president and publisher.

Oprah features United Methodist ‘heroes’

EUREKA SPRINGS, Ark. (UMNS) -- Television superstar Oprah Winfrey put two United Methodists under the microscope to see how they are making medical miracles come true in a small Arkansas town. Dr. Dan Bell and his wife, Suzie, members of Eureka Springs United Methodist Church, are two of the “everyday heroes” featured on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” May 19. The Bells started a free medical clinic in the small town of Eureka Springs in 2005 after attending a workshop at their church on how to be better “kingdom people.” “We wanted to live our faith more than we were,” Dan Bell said in an interview.
